Armstrong, Neil (1930- ), astronaut, test pilot, b. Ohio, USA. Armstrong, with Edwin Aldrin, made the first landing on the moon on 20 July, 1969.

He became the first man to set foot on the surface of the moon at 3.56 am GMT on 21 July.

He said, 'That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.'
