Elizabeth BlackwellBlackwell, Elizabeth (1821-1910), doctor, b. Bristol, England.

Elizabeth Blackwell's family emigrated to the United States when she was a child.

She found it difficult to obtain training as a doctor but, in the end, obtained a place in a college in New York and became the first woman doctor in the world.

Afterwards she helped to start a medical school for women.
