Brunel, Sir Marc Isambard (1769-1849), engineer, b. near Rouen, France. Father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.* Marc Brunel settled in England in 1799. He was one of the first men to use machinery to make things in great numbers-block pulleys for the Royal Navy and boots for the Army. Previously, craftsmen had made such things one at a time. He also built the first tunnel under the River Thames from Rotherhithe to Wapping in 1825-43 and it is still in use as part of London's Underground.
