Capone, Al (Alphonse) |
| Written by historicalpeople.net | |||
Al Capone became one of the most famous men in the United States in the period from 1920-33. In this period, the sale of drinks containing alcohol (such as beer, whisky) was banned. Gangs were formed to smuggle in drink and to run night clubs where drink was sold. This led to rivalry and gun fights between the gangs. Chicago was the worst city for gang warfare and Al Capone was Chicago's chief gangster. People were afraid to give evidence against Capone in court, but he was finally found guilty of trying to avoid paying income tax and was sent to prison for ten years. See Robert J.
