Lewis CarrollCarroll, Lewis (1832-98), author, b. Daresbury, Cheshire, England.

Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and he was a mathematics lecturer at Oxford University.

On 4 July, 1862, he went boating on the River Thames with three small girls, Lorina, Alice and Edith Liddell, and began to tell them a story, making it up as he went along.

Afterwards, he wrote down the story for Alice, who was nine, and in 1865 it was published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. People loved the book at once, and it has been on sale ever since.

In 1871 Carroll went on with Alice's story in Through the Looking Glass.

He wrote several other books for children, including The Annotated Hunting of the Snark, and, under his own name, some books on mathematics.
