Carson, Christopher (1809-68), American hero. As a young man, Kit Carson trapped beaver and fought Indians (Native Americans) in the Rocky Mountains. Later he hunted buffalo and ran a ranch. He acted as guide to the explorer, Major-General John Charles Fremont and, during the American Civil War, became a general in the Union Army. Carson City, capital of Nevada, is named after him.
