Carson, Christopher (1809-68), American hero.

As a young man, Kit Carson trapped beaver and fought Indians (Native Americans) in the Rocky Mountains.

Later he hunted buffalo and ran a ranch.

He acted as guide to the explorer, Major-General John Charles Fremont and, during the American Civil War, became a general in the Union Army.

Carson City, capital of Nevada, is named after him.
