Cartier, Jacques

Cartier, Jacques (1491-1557), French explorer.

Between 1534 and 1541, Cartier made three voyages of discovery to North America.

In 1535 he discovered the St. Lawrence River and sailed up it to the rapids just beyond present-day Montreal, 1000 miles (1600 km) from the Atlantic Ocean.
