Dr. Cartwright was the parson of a parish in Leicestershire during the Industrial Revolution. He became interested in the new machines and invented a loom for weaving cotton cloth. It was driven by a steam engine. In 1789 Dr. Cartwright opened a cloth factory at Doncaster. One of his early looms can be seen today in the Science Museum, London.
