Edith Cavell ran a hospital in Brussels, Belgium, in the First World War (1914-18). The city fell into German hands and she helped about two hundred English and French soldiers to escape to Holland. She was arrested and shot by a German firing squad on 12 October, 1915. There is a statue of Edith Cavell in St. Martin's Place, London.
