Leonard Cheshire was a bomber pilot in the Second World War (1939-45).

He was a group captain with 617 Squadron (the 'Dam Busters') and he won the VC (Victoria Cross), the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross) and the DSO (Distinguished Service Order).

He went as an observer to watch the United States Air Force drop one of the first atom bombs on Nagasaki, Japan in 1945.

After the war he founded the Cheshire Homes for sick people and ran these homes in many parts of the world.
