At one time held the world land speed record and the world water speed record.

In 1947, on Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA he set a record of 394 mph (634.39 km/h) in a Railton Special.

In 1952, on Loch Ness, Scotland, he reached a speed of 207  mph (332.95 km/h) in a jet-engined speedboat named Crusader.

Soon afterwards he was traveling at about 249mph (402.34 km/h) when his boat hit a ripple. It broke into pieces and Cobb was killed.
