'Buffalo Bill' Cody had an adventurous life. He was a Pony Express rider, a scout for the United States Cavalry in wars with the Indians (Native Americans), and a hunter of bison (which were wrongly called buffalo).

He hunted to obtain meat for the workers building the Kansas Pacific Railway, and it was said that he killed 4,280 bison in eighteen months.

Stories of' Buffalo Bill's' adventures were told in popular magazines and he became famous.

He started a Wild West show in 1883 and traveled about the United States and Canada.

Later he visited England and put on a show for Queen Victoria.

The town of Cody, Wyoming, is named after him.
