Cortez, Hernando

Written by historicalpeople.net

Cortez, Hernando (1485-1547), Spanish explorer.

Cortez was a nobleman and studied to be a lawyer.

But instead he set out to seek his fortune in the 'New World' of America. He took part in the conquest of Cuba in 1511 and, six years later, was chosen to lead an expedition into Mexico.

In February 1519, Cortez left Cuba with eleven ships, ten bronze cannon, five hundred men and sixteen horses.

Within two and a half years, with this tiny force, he had conquered the Aztec kingdom of Mexico and captured its great riches for Spain.
