David |

The story of David is told in the Bible. He was a shepherd boy chosen to be the King of Israel and he ruled for about forty years. The Bible says that, as a young man, he won great fame in battle against the Philistines. Armed only with a sling-shot, he fought their champion, a huge warrior named Goliath, and killed him. As king, David won back all the Israelite land held by the Philistines and made Jerusalem the capital of Israel. Besides being a great soldier, David was also a musician. He played the lyre and he wrote some hymns called psalms. Some of these psalms are still recited or sung today in Christian churches. David was the father of King Solomon.
