Edward IIIEdward III (1312-77), King of England, b. Windsor, Berkshire.

Edward III was crowned at the age of fifteen and ruled for fifty years.

He was, above all, a soldier and he spent most of his reign fighting.

In 1333 he defeated the Scots in the Battle of Halidon Hill, Northumberland, and in 1340 he started the Hundred Years War with France, claiming to be the heir to the French throne.

He scored a notable victory at Crecy in 1346. He was the father of Edward, the Black Prince, who often fought at his side.
