Anne Frank was a Jew born at Frankfurt in Germany. In 1933 the Nazis in Germany began to send Jews to prison camps and Anne's family left to live in Holland, (now part of The Netherlands). But in 1942, during the Second World War (1939-45), the Germans took over Holland. With her family and four other people, Anne hid in a secret room. For two years they were not discovered. Then someone gave them away and they were all arrested. Anne was sent to the prison camp at Belsen and there she died. During her time in the secret room, Anne kept a diary. It was sad but beautiful. This diary was found and published in 1947 and it made Anne's name famous. Her Diary was made into a play and also a movie. In Europe today there are many schools and villages for people made homeless in the Second World War. Some of these villages and schools bear Anne Frank's name. See Anne Frank Diary of Anne Frank
