Sigmund Freud was a professor at the University of Vienna from 1902 to 1938. He made a study of how people behave and became probably the most famous of all psychologists. Freud put forward the idea of the 'unconscious mind'. We are aware of thoughts in our 'conscious mind'; but we are not aware of what is happening in our 'unconscious mind'. Freud said that the unconscious mind has an effect on the way people behave. He used his idea to cure people who were mentally sick. He would try to make a patient understand what was going on in their subconscious mind and often this helped them to get better. In 1938 the Germans took over Vienna and began to put Jews in prison camps. Freud was a Jew. He fled to London and died there. See Sigmund Freud The Basic Writings of Sigmund Freud
