Jacob Ludwig Grimm and his brother, Wilhelm Carl, were both librarians and students of literature. They began collecting old German stories from books and by talking to old peasants in country places. In 1812, they published the stories in Kinder-und- Hausmdrchen (Nursery and Household Tales). The book was popular and so was a second book published three years later. They were translated into many foreign languages and appeared in England as German Popular Tales. In time they became known as Grimms' Fairy Tales. They include Snow White, Cinderella, Little Red Riding-Hood, Rapunzel, Tom Thumb and Puss in Boots. The two brothers wrote many other books that were for scholars, including a great dictionary. They lived together most of their lives, even after Wilhelm was married, and they both became professors at Berlin University in 1841. See acob Ludwig Carl Grimm Grimms' Tales for Young and Old
