Publius Aelius Hadrianus became Emperor of Rome in 117. He paid a great deal of attention to the way the Roman Empire was run and visited many countries in the East as well as the West. In Britain he had Hadrian's Wall built, from the Solway Firth to the River Tyne, to stop tribes in Scotland from raiding England. In Rome he built a castle on the banks of the River Tiber to hold his tomb. It still stands today, but it is now called Castel St. Angelo. See Anthony Everitt Hadrian and the Triumph of Rome
