Hampden, John |
| Written by historicalpeople.net | |||
John Hampden became a national hero in 1637. King Charles I wanted people to pay a tax called Ship Money and Hampden refused to pay. In the Civil War (1643-47) he fought for Parliament against the King as colonel of an infantry regiment. He was mortally wounded in a battle at Chalgrove, Oxfordshire, and there is a statue of him at Chalgrove today.
