Ibn Battuta (Mohammed ibn Abdulla) was born at Tangier. At the age of twenty, he set out to visit all the Muslim countries in the world and spent the next thirty years in travel. He visited southern Spain, Mecca, Persia, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, Bokhara, India, China and Sumatra and he crossed the Sahara Desert from Morocco to Timbuktu. Afterwards he wrote a book describing his travels and the wonderful sights he had seen. See Ross E. Dunn The Adventures of Ibn Battuta
