Helen Keller was seriously ill as a baby and became deaf and blind. Helped by a teacher named Anne Sullivan, she learned to read and write in Braille and also to speak. She went to college and afterwards began to work to help blind and deaf people everywhere. She spoke about them at public meetings and wrote books using a special typewriter. She visited Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe as part of her work, and her books have been translated into many languages. See Helen Keller Helen Keller: The Story of my Life
