Mao Tse-tung (1893-1976), Chinese statesman.

Mao Tse-tung was the leader of Communist China, being chairman of the Chinese Communist Party.

In 1926, he worked with Chiang Kai-shek to make China into a modern country, but later he fled to North-West China. From there, after the Second World War (1939-45), he drove Chiang Kai-shek out of China and in 1949 started the People's Republic of China.

In 1966, a little red book was produced for his followers to read called Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung and it is said that more copies of this book have been sold or given away than of any other book except the Bible.

The book contains Mao's ideas on how the people in China should behave to make their country strong.
