Matthew, Saint (1st century ad), believed to be writer of the first Gospel in the Bible. Matthew was one of Jesus Christ's twelve apostles. Before he became a follower of Jesus, he was known by the name of Levi and had the job of collecting taxes for the Romans. Matthew taught Christianity to the Jews. It is not known how or when he died but it is believed he was killed.
