Matthews, Sir Stanley (1915-2000), footballer (soccer), b. Hanley, Staffordshire, England. Stanley Matthews was one of the greatest soccer players. An outside right, he was noted for his ball control and he played fifty-six times for England from 1934-57. He played for Stoke City and Blackpool and later became manager of Port Vale.
