Matthews, Sir Stanley

Matthews, Sir Stanley (1915-2000), footballer (soccer), b. Hanley, Staffordshire, England.

Stanley Matthews was one of the greatest soccer players.

An outside right, he was noted for his ball control and he played fifty-six times for England from 1934-57.

He played for Stoke City and Blackpool and later became manager of Port Vale.

He was still playing in the Football League at the age of fifty and was the first professional footballer to be knighted.
