NehruNehru, Jawaharlal (1889-1964), Indian Prime Minister.

Jawaharlal Nehru's father, Motilal Nehru, was a rich lawyer. In his day, India was ruled by Britain but some Indians wanted the country to be ruled by Indians themselves. Their leader was Gandhi. Motilal Nehru helped him and because of this was sent to prison by the British several times.

Jawaharlal went to school and university in England. Afterwards he became a lawyer in Allahabad but gave this up to work with his father and Gandhi against the British.

He also was sent to prison many times and his sentences added up to five and a half years.

In 1947, Britain withdrew from India and Nehru was made the first Prime Minister of India. He had the job to his death.

He worked hard to improve India and also worked for world peace.

He supported the United Nations and was looked upon as one of the leading statesmen of the world.
