Edith NesbitNesbit, Edith (1858-1924), author, b. Kennington, London.

E. Nesbit's first work to appear in print was a poem in the Sunday Magazine. When it was published she was seventeen. Four years later, she married Hubert Bland. Her husband's business failed. He became ill and the family became short of money.

Edith began writing in order to earn money and for almost twenty years she wrote all kinds of things from verses to novels.

Then, at Christmas 1899, her book for children, The Story of the Treasure Seekers, was published and it was a great success.

There followed seventeen more famous children's books. They include: The Book of Dragons (1900), The Would-Be-Goods (1901), Five Children and It (1902), The Story of the Amulet (1904), New Treasure Seekers (1904), Oswald Bastable And Others (1905), The Railway Children (1906), The Enchanted Castle (1907). The Railway Children was made into a popular movie and TV series.
