Tenzing Norgay first took part in an attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1935 when he was a porter with a British expedition. Three years later, he went with another British party and in 1952, with a Swiss party, he climbed to 28,185 feet (8591 meters) - less than 997 feet (304) meters from the top. One year later, he and Edmund Hillary became the first men to reach the summit of Everest. Tenzing was awarded the George Medal. See Jamling T.
