Otto, Nikolaus August

Otto, Nikolaus August (1832-91), German engineer.

In 1876, Nikolaus Otto made the first four-stroke gas (not gasoline) engine to be placed on sale.

This was the forerunner of the petrol/gasoline engine used in the motor car.
