PocahontasPocahontas (about 1595-1617), Indigenous American heroine.

Pocahontas was the daughter of Powhattan, chief of the Powhattan Indians.

She saved the life of Captain John Smith, the leader of the settlers from England at Jamestown, Virginia.

Years later, she married another English settler named John Rolfe. She became a Christian and was baptised Rebecca.

Rolfe took her home with him to England. In London, she was invited to concerts and parties by the ladies of fashion, and she even met the Queen, Anne of Denmark. Then she fell ill. Blaming the London weather, Rolfe set out to take her back to Virginia but she died aboard ship just off Gravesend and is buried in the churchyard there.
