Royce, Sir Frederick Henry

Sir Frederick Henry RoyceRoyce, Sir Frederick Henry (1863-1933), engineer, b. Peterborough, Northamptonshire, England.

Henry Royce trained as a railway engineer but started a business in Manchester making electric dynamos.

In 1903, he made a motor car and afterwards he began to work with the Hon. C. S. Rolls.

They set up the Rolls-Royce factory in Derby and there, in 1906, produced the first Rolls-Royce car. It was called the Silver Ghost.

During the First World War (1914-18), Royce began designing aeroplane engines and Rolls-Royce are still noted for aircraft engines today as well as for their high quality motor cars.

Royce was knighted in 1930.
