SaladinSaladin (about 1137-93), soldier, b. Tekrit in present-day Iraq.

Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt, was the greatest Muslim warrior of the 12th century.

In 1187, he captured Jerusalem and this led to the Third Crusade. This was the Crusade that Richard I of England took part in.

Richard captured the city of Acre after a siege of two years and in 1192, he and Saladin made a truce, dividing the Holy Land between Muslims and Christians.
