Stanley, Sir Henry Morton |
| Written by historicalpeople.net | |||
Stanley became the adopted son of a merchant in New Orleans, having sailed to the United States as a cabin boy. In 1869, he was sent by the New York Herald to find Dr. David Livingstone. He found the missing explorer at Ujiji on the shores of Lake Tanganyika on 10 November, 1871. His words of greeting were, 'Dr. Livingstone I presume,' and they became famous. In 1874-77, Stanley led a party on the first voyage down the River Congo (also known as River Zaire). Later he helped the Belgians to start settlements in the region.
