Virgil

Virgil (70-19 bc), Roman poet.

Publius Vergilius Maro, known as Virgil, wrote one of the greatest of all poems, the Aeneid. This poem is still studied by people who learn Latin.

Virgil worked for eleven years on the Aeneid, and he did not think it was ready to be published. Then he became seriously ill.

As he was dying, he asked his friends to burn the poem. They did not do so and it was published on the instructions of Augustus, the Emperor of Rome.

The poem tells the story of the wanderings of a Trojan hero named Aeneas.
